Sometimes, it's the fleeting moments in football that make all of it—the travelling, the pain, the worrying—worth it. Last night (June 7), West Ham United had their moment, claiming their first European trophy since 1965 in dramatic fashion against Fiorentina.
Jarrod Bowen sent West Ham into delirium after finishing off a delicious through-ball from Lucas Paqueta in the 90th minute, after the game looked to be heading toward extra time.
Tonight (June 8) at 7pm, the east London team will return from Prague, where the match was held, to the capital to flaunt their medals and their Europa Conference League trophy in front of their faithful.
The open-top bus was designed especially for tonight's parade, and will hold the entire first-team squad that brought the trophy home as well as manager David Moyes and the coaching staff.
With victory in the Europa Conference League final, it also marks West Ham's first trophy since 1980, when they were victorious in the FA Cup.
Bowen's goal came after Saïd Benrahma's second-half penalty was quickly canceled out by a delicate finish from Giacomo Bonaventura.
Captain Declan Rice, who lifted the trophy last night, and his team of Irons will take to the bus at the champion's statue by their old stadium, Upton Park, before heading towards the Greengate Street junction.
From Greengate Street, the bus will head towards High Street and then onto New Plaistow Road. After its beeline down West Ham Lane the parade will finish with a triumphant event at Stratford Town Hall.
The trophy parade will take place at 7pm tonight. Any fan of West Ham United who can make it is invited to join in with the celebrations and cheer on the time who etched their names in European football history.
The team will be welcomed by Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz at Stratford, where Declan Rice will hold up the trophy once more, this time on east London soil after raising it aloft at the Fortuna Arena in Prague.
West Ham's last victory in a European final came nearly 60 years ago in the Cup Winners Cup in 1965. This team was captained by Booby Moore and also included Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters, fellow winners of the World Cup with England a year later.
Fans may not have to wait as long for a victory either, as the Europa Conference League win means West Ham have guaranteed a place in next season's Europa League competition.
This weekend, fellow English club Manchester City will also be hoping for success when they compete for the Champions League trophy against Inter Milan.
